Poster Freedom to Pavel Ustinov

Client:
Year:
2019

ASK LAB created a poster in support of Russian actor Pavel Ustinov as part of a public campaign calling for his release. Ustinov was arrested during the 2019 Moscow protests and convicted of assaulting a police officer, receiving a three-and-a-half-year prison sentence despite video footage that contradicted the prosecution’s account of the incident. His case quickly became a focus of public attention, with artists, journalists, and members of the creative community calling for his release.

The poster was developed as part of the wider campaign, using graphic design as a direct tool for communication and public engagement. Its purpose was not simply to document the case, but to make the message visible and easy to circulate across physical and digital spaces. Following widespread public pressure and the emergence of video evidence, Ustinov’s conviction was overturned and he was released, making the campaign an example of how collective action and visual communication can contribute to a real-world outcome.
